Zeaxanthin Research performed at Schepens Eye Research Institute and Department of Ophthalmology, Harvard Medical School has established that natural dietary zeaxanthin (zee-uh-zan'-thin) plays an essential role in protecting the retina of the eye from the damaging effects of light.

Bilberry (Vaccinum myrtillus) has been shown in studies to improve the reaction of the eye to darkness. Bilberry is effective because it supports the regeneration of retinol purple -- also called visual purple - usually a very slow process: studies of bilberry extract on individuals with retinitis pigmentosa and hemeralopia (inability to see distinctly in bright light) have demonstrated significant improvement in vision.
